Our preference is weekly rentals. Sometimes we may be able to rent for less than 7 nights. If you have a special request, please ask. We try to be flexible.
Where is Villa 19?
19 Opera Salvaje, Villa 19, is in the Central Pacific region of Costa Rica. It is about one mile from Playa Hermosa, and about 12 minutes from the surf town of Jaco. Jaco Beach-Playa Hermosa is the first large surf/tourist community when traveling south from the San Jose airport. Opera Salvaje is unique in that it is in a protected community offering privacy, but also access to local amenities.
Do I need to rent a car?
There are several choices. Many people prefer to rent a car near the San Jose airport and drive themselves to the beach. Others prefer a car service to drive them to their vacation rental and then utilize the local taxi services as needed. Your hosts, Michelle and Mike, will be helpful regarding finding you pleasant reliable taxi service. We will be able to advise regarding transportation issues; just ask!
Should I bring my boards or rent?
Again, your preference! There are many local surf shops. If you wish to rent, Mike is our "surf expert". He would be pleased to advise you regarding where to rent your boards.
Is this a good place to spend a vacation with the kids?
Well, not knowing your kids... But seriously, yes! Opera Salvaje is a community with several families. The community is safe and family-oriented. It is laid-back, without a high population density or high traffic. There is a swimming pool on the property for your relaxation, as well as the Opera Salvaje Swim Club pool for serious swimmers or for lessons. We have cable TV, hammocks, a spacious lawn. You might want to take the kids on "nature walks". We are fascinated by the toucans and monkeys we see right in our own neighborhood.
Are there restaurants and bars at Playa Hermosa?
Yes; there are a great number of restaurants and "hot spots" at Playa Hermosa. There is unbelievable pizza, seared tuna, banana pancakes, as well as typical Costa Rican fare. You may want to enjoy beer or cocktails after dinner with a game of pool or foosball at one of the local bars.
Is it safe to stay at Villa 19?
Yes. Your managers live next door. Opera Salvaje is a protected community with a guard at the entrance. (You may want to introduce yourselves to them.) The garden and pool people have been selected by Michelle and Mike as people they know and value. One of the advantages of renting in a community is that your neighbors live there fulltime and feel accountable.
Is there a grocery store?
Yes; there are a number of grocery stores in Jaco: Mas X Menos and the new Maxi Bodega offer everything you need. We suggest you take in the local "market" on Fridays. The fruits are amazing. We suggest you visit the bakery stall; their granola is unbelievably good. Shirlee likes it as a dessert!
What about the tropical wildlife?
Expect to see toucans, macaws, green parrots, hummingbirds, monkeys and whales. (The whales are generally seen January through March; but some have been seen in November.) There is a turtle sanctuary close-by with hatchlings during nesting season (Sept-Dec).
